The little battery icon in the taskbar at the upper right of the iPhone screen gives a rough indication of your battery life. Unfortunately the icon is not very useful for you to gauge how much battery is remaining on your iPhone.
Apple has now included a special feature on iPhone 3GS with a battery percentage.
Turn on Battery Percentage
Goto Settings -> General -> Usage -> Battery Percentage -> ON
You should now see the battery percentage remaining on your iPhone 3GS just beside the battery icon. This is a good tool to gauge the amount of battery available on your iPhone 3GS.
