iPhone users will be asking what happen to my data on the iPhone if I buy a new computer or I have to reformat my computer. The first thing you will lose will be your music, videos and photos if you have not backup it to an external storage. However once u download an Apps on iTunes, you will have a record of it in the system. I guess you will have no prob if you redownload it again even if it's a paid apps. Contacts will not be lost as you can merge the data with your new computer.
You can backup your Applications from your iPhone to iTunes on your new computer
1. Right click on your iPhone in the left hand explorer bar
2. Select “Transfer Purchases”
It will copy all the apps from your iPhone to the new PC.
Some things will be transferred back to your PC (contacts and apps mainly) through iTunes with the first sync. Just make sure to tell itunes to "Merge" data between your iPhone and PC/MAC when it prompts you. If you need to get media(Songs, Videos and Pictures off of your phone, you will have to resort to third party software to move it to your PC. After moving to your PC, you can add them back to the iTunes Library.
By right, the apps shouldn't be affected. I will open my iTunes first without connecting my iPhone to the computer. After that I will login to my iTunes account first and then connect my iPhone to do the sync.
But you can follow this method to backup your apps before reformatting your computer.
If you are using windows, iTunes is backed up in (this is the default folder)
C:/>Documents & settings>"user name">My Documents>My Music>iTunes
All the apps and store in this folder (this is the default folder), copy the entire itunes folder to a external storage (USB, external hard disk)when you have reformatted, install iTunes and copy the iTunes folder from the external source to the same destination
C:/>Documents & settings>"user name">My Documents>My Music>iTunes
So if u change the default folder to some other folder, basically u just do the same thing again.
